Hi, All, Since you'll be hearing a lot from me, I will introduce myself first. I'm in my 6th year on the faculty of the iSchool. I got my PhD in Computer Science here at Maryland, and did my undergraduate and masters work at the University of Chicago. I'm director of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab ( hcil.cs.umd.edu) and I study social networks, especially how to infer information about people and their relationships. I do a lot of work on computing with trust. I have recently finished a text book on social network analysis that will be out in the spring ( www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0124055311/j16t3i5j15-20), and if you're interested in this topic, I'm teaching LBSC708L on campus this spring which covers all that material. Work stuff aside, I am an avid hockey fan. When there isn't a lockout, I'm at most Caps games, and I play hockey in a men's league on Saturday nights (this is why you will see HCIL members in bright green hockey jerseys if you come by the lab). When it's warmer, I row (double scull) and do triathlons. I have a very old, blind golden retriever named K (who has a twitter account - twitter.com/tha_sneet), and my current at-home project is raising bees (and hopefully, eventually, getting some honey from them). I'm Susan. I'm kind of uptight about this class. I am glad that I am taking it over Winter Term. I like the idea of focusing intensely on where I have the greatest need as a librarian-wanna-be. I have been a public school teacher, an attorney in a small law firm and a federal gov't bureaucrat. I most like being the mom of Rocco and Moose - dogs that I adopted this spring from the Washington Animal Rescue League. My handle is Susanhikerbiker. Yes, I like to hike and bike. I do it for recreation, not to compete. I live in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Hello,
I am Divija and I am a graduate student. I am into Electrical and Computer Engineering program. I have a couple of years of experience in IT and worked as a software engineer. Hello. My name is Sophie. I am in my second year of the Library Science program at UMD. My concentration is Information and Diverse Populations, and I am a member of the concentration's scholarship cohort. I don't have much of a background in programming, and find these types of courses difficult. A little nervous, but still optimistic!

I'm Meg Garnett, a first-year MLS student in the Archives concentration. I'm also a GA for the university libraries, so I work 20 hours a week in the Preservation Department, which is housed in the depths of McKeldin. If you work in Hornbake or one of the subject libraries, you may see me coming around to collect climate data every so often.
After college I originally was in a PhD program in medieval history; since then I've worked as an electrical-engineering research assistant (my job was to make the papers read like English, and ferret out previous research - I know nothing about engineering!), a gardener and landscape designer, an editor, and a technical-services librarian. My particular interests are in book and paper conservation, restoration, and bookbinding, so technology tends to be something I use rather than something I study.

Hi! My name is Alex Reigle. I work full time as a library technician for the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, splitting my time in between the American Art/Portrait Gallery and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Since I work full time, I'm going at the break-neck speed of 1 class a semester and this is only my second course I have taken. Two years ago I majored in art history with a focus in Asian studies and I plan on staying in the art museum library field. On the weekends I waitress at a diner on Capitol Hill, which I love. I love being active and am always on the move, but I take time to be lazy with my beagle when I can. Like Sophie I am a little nervous abou this course but excited to learn something new!

Hello! My name is KJ Hillgren. I'm a full time student, commuting from Baltimore. This is my second full semester at UMD and I'm excited to be working online for this intensive course. My background is in the thrilling field of Scandinavian Area Studies, Finnish, and Swedish. If anyone has a burning desire to talk Kalevala, I'm your woman.
While I am an avid user of technology (read: pinterest addict), it's not something I feel very fluent in. My goal is to work as a research or reference librarian at a professional school library, so it's definitely something I need to understand better.

Hi! My name is Ji An. I'm a first year graduate student in Measurement, Statistics, and Evaluation. Before I moved to Maryland, I had been a Chinese language and culture teacher in a public school in Michigan. Like Sophie and Alex, I am nervous too... I selected this course because technology information is so widely used in our society and I just feel like to know more about it. Happy New Year and have a wonderful winter term!

Hi! My name is Fiona Jardine. I'm a first year MLS student in the IDP specialism as well as a grad assistant in the Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy office in the Stamp Student Union. I am interested in continuing my studies through to PhD, hopefully studying some sort of diverse population and information access.

Hi, everybody! My name is Fred Katz. I'm in the HILS program, the dual masters in History and Library Science. I am interested in digital curation and digital preservation as well as human-computer -interaction. I am looking to get a job in one of the major museums in Washington area or else work for industry when I graduate. My specialty in history is the history of science and technology. I also have degrees in mathematics and music production. I teach a course on Science, Technology, and Society In the College of Engineering. Basically, I am interested in how people relate to each other over the issues of science and technology, so this is a perfect course for me. I've done very little web programming so I am looking to develop that skill set. But like others have mentioned, I too am nervous about keeping up in so short a time.

I probably shouldn't admit to this, Fred, but I have a Fred the Cat. (I didn't name him, the shelter did ... but I thought it fit so I kept it.) His technology interest is laptops: they're flat and warm and they kind of purr.

Hello all. My name is Elliott Wrenn. I am a first year MLS student pursuing the archives specialization. My primary interests are with oral history production and management. I previously worked with forced migrants, which brought me to my interest in oral histories. I too think that I have questionable technical skills so now is the time to change that.
Now I get to use my familiarity with USCIS/immigration rules at the university--I'm a graduate assistant in the Office of International Services (the office that helps/advises international students enrolled at UMCP).

Hello! My name is Margaret Leist and I am a second year MLS student. As part of the IDP scholarship cohort, I am pursuing both the information & diverse populations and e-government concentrations. Currently, I'm a Graduate Assistant for the Institutional Review Board on campus and Education Assistant at Dumbarton House in Georgetown.
I moved to DC last year for this program and would like to stay in the area for awhile if possible. Hopefully a boost in my tech skills will help me do that!

Hey Everyone!
I'm a little late to introduce myself, but my name is Kim White and I'm in my second year of the MLS program focusing on Information and Diverse Populations and E-Government. I work as a research assistant in iPAC and serve as the president of iDiversity, one of the iSchool's student organizations.
My only experience in coding is as a 14 year-old who was very into MySpace- I used to take templates, gut them and rebuild them to my liking (which amazes me that I once did that and then promptly forgot about it until grad school)- and in Erik Mitchell's LBSC 670 class which was code-heavy for the subject. I'm definitely ready to devote some time to the skill and hope to learn a lot!
