I like you alarm:) The design is very easy to use. The buttons are BIG, which is more convenient when setting time. Everything is on the front face. Pretty easy to see, and you won't miss anything:) My alarm clock is stunningly rendered at terpconnect.umd.edu/~fjardine/t5/First, I thought back to some of the alarm clocks I have had to use in hotels and how hard they were to use. I thought about the essentials of an alarm clock and came up with the following list: - large, lit-up display of current time - ability to set both the time and alarm without consulting the instruction book - a big snooze button - obvious and easy to use button to turn the alarm on and off and something on the screen to display whether the alarm is on or off My design could work either digitally, for example on a computer, smartphone, or tablet, or physically as an alarm clock if you were "fold" the design just above the display (i.e. the buttons would be on the top of the alarm clock and the display on the front). The numbers are large and illuminated. To the side of the numbers are areas that can be lit-up or darkened depending on their status. These include AM/PM for the current time, whether the alarm is off or on, and what time the alarm is set for if it is turned on. The snooze button is large and easy to find in a sleepy haze. The alarm on/off slider clearly shows the status of the alarm and is easy to find when you want to turn the alarm off after hitting the snooze button numerous times. The buttons to change current time and alarm time should probably be a little smaller (to make the snooze button larger in relation to them), but my drawing skills are not the best in the world... There are simple directions on the buttons themselves ("Press + Hold to change time/alarm") with simple "hour +" and "minute +" buttons next to them. I think this alarm clock would be obvious to use (buttons are pressed, sliders are slid), and very quick to complete tasks required (setting alarm time and whether it is on or off).

Hi Kim, You alarm design is very professional! Not only the alarm itself, but also the way you show it... First, the color is very pretty, and the shape is cute as well. What is more, it only has the very basic use, and every detail is very easy to learn and convenient to use. I'll definitely buy it if I don't need other functions:)

I love how you designed the buttons--rolling up or down to instead of pushing + or -. The volume function is very sweet! I've never used any alarm with that function before and hated when the loud alarm music had to wake up my roommates when I was in college. I like it myself, and I will buy one like this for my grandparents who cannot see or hear very well in their eighties. However, they never need alarm because they always wake up on time:) Great job:) terpconnect.umd.edu/~ssmith16/t5/My alarm clock has very big numbers that will benefit (1) near-sighted people and (2) people who do not keep alarm clocks close to their beds. As soon as a person plugs in my alarm clock, it has power and is on. Snooze is automatically 3 minutes. It can be hit multiple times. The volume button, hours button, minutes button and AM/PM button rock up and down. Rocking up makes the numbers go up, rocking down makes the numbers go down. To set the alarm, a person hits the set alarm button. The display numbers will flash. The person adjusts the hours, minutes, AM/PM button. Then the person hits set alarm again. To set the volume, a person hits the dark circular button above the volume button (which rocks up and down to set the volume). This is a no-nonsense bare bones alarm clock created by someone who dislikes alarm clocks and would keep it in a drawer.

The writeup on my alarm clock is at terpconnect.umd.edu/~fkatz/t5/. You can see my mock up at the bottom of that page, or you can just save time and click on terpconnect.umd.edu/~fkatz/t5/Katz_Alarm_Clock_Redesign.jpg. The writeup goes into my my thinking at length, but the 30 second elevator speech is that my design was based on a simple alarm clock that I have been using for 20 years. While trying to keep it simple, I added: -GPS for ultra-accurate time and for local time zone, so no need to set the actual time; -but I added the ability to create a personal offset from GPS time, in case I want to "get a jump" on things; -Super big numbers for actual time; -A secondary readout for the alarm time, to give me peace of mind that I'll wake up in time; -an ambient light sensor, to dim the illumination during the day; and, -USB charging ports for all the iDevices I have charging on my bedside table at night. -Fred

I really like the cube design of your clock. Not only is it harder to knock over, but it makes a nice symmetrical frame for the round clock face. I also like ho you made the snooze bar cover so much of the top, making it easy to find, and putting all the other controls on the sides. In essence, the entire clock becomes one big snooze bar. Finally, the textured surfaces are great aids to figuring out what you're reaching for in the dark of the night or early morning.

I like how you separated time and alarm function to the right and left sides of your clock. I also appreciate the snooze button in the center of the clock. My only concern is that if the snooze button is pushed too hard, I might push the clock over the edge of the table! For that reason, I think I prefer snooze bars on top of the clock. I would probably get used to your design after using it for a few nights, though. Finally, nice work on your drawings- they are clear and effective at communicating what functions your clock has.

Questionable ppt art is available here: terpconnect.umd.edu/~hillgren/t5/I have been failing at alarm clock usage since grade school. I just hate them. I'm always paranoid that the alarm clock isn't actually set and have to check it multiple times. Sometimes I forget if it's AM or PM. If the snooze button is too hard to find, then I turn the whole thing off in my sleep. I designed a basic interface that could be used either on a touch screen phone or, as I prefer, a stand alone clock. The purpose is to keep everything up front for the sleeper. It should be painfully obvious whether or not the alarm clock is on, how to set it, and how to re-set the time. In this case, everything but the screen displaying the time is a button. On top, of course, is the all-important snooze button. This prevents the sleeper from having to knock everything off her nightstand in an attempt to make the alarm stop. Below it, in the middle, is a big and readable screen displaying the time, including AM and pm. Below, to the left, is a toggle switch to turn the alarm on and off and to also register visually whether or not the alarm is on. Next are the time set and alarm set buttons. When these are held, the appropriate time will flash on screen and adjust as you change it. My goal was to really try and strip the clock down to the essential functions, forgoing all bells and whistles, to make the usability as obvious as possible. This had the added benefit of making it viable as an analog or digital interface, which I did not expect!

You chose one of my favorite functions: the obvious alarm ON / OFF button. This definitely falls under user preference, but I will absolutely not buy an alarm clock that doesn't make it embarrassingly obvious that my alarm is set. I also really like the setting slide for the time set. It's nice to know which time denomination you're setting while you're setting it. I prefer small, transportable alarm clocks. Currently I use my telephone's alarm, but transportable clocks can be useful on trips, specifically when you cannot charge your phone or it doesn't work (e.g. abroad when a phone doesn't have service and essentially becomes a complex alarm clock). The clock displayed could be either battery or socket powered, but to highlight the clock's transportability battery-powered would be better. terpconnect.umd.edu/~ewrenn/t5/These are the main functions that I want a clock to have: - Digital Time The time display is large and digital. A user should be able to read the time easily from across the room. A user sets the time on the right side of the clock. The user can see the front display while pressing the minute, hour, and AM/PM buttons on the right to adjust the time. The user adjusts the alarm time by moving the switch to the "Set Alarm" position. When the switch is in the "Set Alarm" position the buttons on the right adjust the alarm's minute, hour, and AM-PM settings. The date can be set/adjusted using the right panel of the clock by setting the switch to the "Set Date" position. In the "Set Date" Position the buttons control the date's day, month, and year, respectively. Pushing the switch all the way down to the "Setting Locked" position disables the Set Clock buttons. -AM/PM Display The AM/PM display is clearly illuminated beside the time display. -Date The date is displayed with the day first, month next, and year last. The superscript D,M, and Y are added so that the user clearly knows 3/1/2013 is March 1st rather than January 3rd. -Day A user does not need to set the day. Once the date is selected the clock will recognize the day because the information is preloaded in the clock's computer. -Alarm The user knows when the alarm is set because of the bell display on the front of the clock. The bell disappears when the alarm is turned off. The user can set the alarm on the left side of the clock. The options are clearly labeled: the alarm is on when the switch is up and it is off when the switch is down. -Snooze The clock has a large snooze button on the top of the clock. There are no other buttons on the top of the clock so that a user doesn't mistakenly hit the snooze button while tying to hit another.

I think the charging ports are an inspired touch! There's already a surplus of wires on my nightstand and desk. I can appreciate the design of a device that would simplify that setup. The GPS time is also very convenient, although the luddite in me questions whether or not it will always work. That said, I appreciate that it removes a cognitive step for the user. Would it have a backup battery for travel? Or would you need to bring an adapter outside of the US? The writeup on my alarm clock is at terpconnect.umd.edu/~fkatz/t5/.
